North Uist to St Kilda Kitesurf Attempt

August 27, 2016

EPIC CHARITY KITESURF ATTEMPT

In 2015 Richard successfully completed the seven mile kitesurf crossing from the Island of North Uist to the Monach Islands and back for '1 Million Miles for Ellie', in memory of Ellie MacDonald who died of cancer at the age of just 23 and lived in the next door croft to him on North Uist. He is raising funds for three charities: Cancer Research UK, Maggie's Centres and Macmillan Cancer Support.

On a good day on North Uist you can just see the volcanic archipelago islands of St Kilda forty miles out into the Atlantic. Visits to these islands must be done in good weather with light winds given the Atlantic ocean and offshore weather can change very quickly. Kitesurfing requires a fair amount of wind which in turn generally means large waves when out in the Atlantic, which is not easy given a crossing of approximately four hours, let alone the fitness required. So any attempt at a successful crossing requires near perfect conditions to fly the kite. Here is Richard's story (with some great pictures) of his first attempt (and rescue!), a life affirming day in memory of Ellie MacDonald......

Richard Bramble Tableware and Design History

August 1, 2016

Richard's first ceramic collaborations were inspired when he was working with top chefs creating 'The Star Chefs Cookbook' back in 1997, including one between the chef Gordon Ramsay and Villeroy & Boch Pottery to create an Aubergine design porcelain dress plate for the chef's first restaurant. Richard then developed this concept taking his ingredient studies (Red Mullet, Lobster, John Dory, Aubergine, Fennel, Saffron, Wines, Champagnes and more...) that featured in the book and using a summary of the text around the plate rims, he created an ingredient plate design range. Both Villeroy & Boch and Wedgwood potteries considered producing these ranges but due to the specialist nature Richard chose Jersey Pottery, with whom he subsequently had a working relationship for the next eighteen years.
